FIC: Perchance to Sleep
TITLE: Perchance to Sleep
AUTHOR: [info]shutterbug_12
PAIRING: House/Stacy
RATING: PG
SUMMARY: House can't sleep.
DISCLAIMER: Don't own them. Make love, not lawsuits.
NOTES: Written during a bout of insomnia. Thanks to my first readers. Concrit and general feedback is love.

Stacy padded towards the living room, her bathrobe wrapped around her, untied, her bare feet stepping lightly over cold floor boards. Squinting against the electric glow of the muted television, she surveyed the room. Greg sat hunched in the corner of the couch, his legs stretched onto the coffee table, arms crossed over his chest. His head was bowed, eyes cast downwards. His chest deflated with a soft sigh.

She drew close to the couch, approaching silently. Her eyes fell on a stack of papers, only a quarter-inch thick, that occupied the adjacent cushion. Ivory paper. Cotton fibers. Her finger traced the printed letters of his name, dragged over the neat list of publications, qualifications, certifications.

"I got fired."

She nodded, knew better than to pry, and set the resumes on the end table. Wordlessly, she settled onto the seat beside him. His face turned away from her. Stacy chewed on her bottom lip, uncertain. She swallowed the barrage of questions rising in her throat. "Do you want to talk about it?" Her voice rasped, scratchy with sleep.

Greg shook his head, arms tightening across his chest.

"Honey, you should come to bed. You could deal with this in the morning." Her fingertips ghosted through the hair at the back of his head.

"I can't sleep," he admitted, his eyes still averted, a forced swallow following another sigh.

Stacy dropped her arm across his shoulders and urged him to turn, whispering, "Come here."

"Stace, no, I don't want--"

"Just shut up, Greg." Amidst his weak, half-hearted protests, her hands guided his body to lie flat, his head resting in the circle of her folded legs. As his eyes closed, she lifted the bottom hem of his shirt and slid her hand over his body, tracing a broad line from his hip to his chest. His head turned, his nose nudging her leg, and one arm rose to curl around her thigh, his hand coming to rest low on her back. A soft, sleep-laden smile pulled at her lips as she lifted her other hand to his head, stroking his hair, his forehead with light sweeping motions. His fingers lazily mirrored the movement and gradually slowed to a stop, his face relaxing, his breaths evening out with sleep.

Stacy reached behind her, adjusting one throw pillow for herself before slipping another under Greg's head. She reached for the blanket draped over the back of the couch, unfolded it, and laid it over his body. This, she thought as she settled her head on the cushion, was worth a stiff neck in the morning.

Love the restraint here. And some great details--love the way you've shown the resume, and the way House won't look at her.

Thank you. Despite that shell of bravado, I don't think he would take being fired very well.

I loved this. It was very peaceful and loving. I really liked how you had Stacy comforting instead of asking about his firing right away. This was wonderful! :)

(One small thing: Stacy padded towards the living room, her bathrobe wrapped around her, untied, her bare feet stepping lighting over cold floor boards. Is this supposed to be "stepping lightly?")

Thanks for catching that. See, this is what happens when you write at five o'clock in the morning. ;)

And thank you. I think Stacy knew better than to start bombarding him with questions or launch into a lecture; it would have riled him up even further, which neither of them needed.

That is absolutely beautiful. (Sorry, nothing useful. But just /beautiful./)

Thank you, dear. It's useful enough for me. =)

So sweet, even though the subject matter is nominally depressing. House and domesticity seems like such an unlikely combination, more so since we've never gotten much more than a glimpse of that time in his life, but you fill in the blanks very well. Isn't insomnia-fic fun?
shutterbug_12: HouseStacy Smile[info]shutterbug_12 on March 8th, 2008 08:48 pm (UTC)
Thanks. There were bound to be domestic moments like this in five years. Insomnia-fic is fun; it actually helped me get to sleep myself. (Five-thirty in the morning, for crying out loud. I never actually had a night where I physically couldn't fall asleep. It was bizarre.)

This is really beautiful. One of the things I love about your House/Stacy stories is that he let her into his life and his thoughts, and she could touch him physically. He rarely lets anyone do that on screen. So it works beautifully that she could overcome his objections and get him to lie down with her.

I think you need to tweak the bit where his arm curls around her leg. What you mean, I believe, is that his hand slipped up her leg and came to rest at the small of her back. It's a lovely moment, a way of embracing her, but as it's written now, there's a gap between where he starts out and where he winds up.
shutterbug_12: HouseStacy Smile[info]shutterbug_12 on March 8th, 2008 08:23 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much. There seemed to be a lot of physical contact happening between them even on screen. At least, much more between them than between House and any other character, and I think he definitely would have been more comfortable with physical touches from her, for the most part, during their relationship.

Thanks for that. I've tweaked it a bit. Does it work better?
pwcorgigirl[info]pwcorgigirl on March 8th, 2008 08:31 pm (UTC)
Yes, it does. I love the idea of that languid half-embrace as he falls asleep under her touch. *melts*

Very tight and very, very sweet. Nice work!

Oh, that was just LOVELY. I loved that House let Stacy comfort him, that she knew how to overcome his initial reluctance.
shutterbug_12: HouseStacy Smile[info]shutterbug_12 on March 9th, 2008 05:02 am (UTC)
Thank you! I certainly think Stacy would know how to handle with most everything he could dish out. I'm glad you enjoyed this. =)

You remain the only writer who makes Stacy work for me. I like your Stacy and I can see her in the woman we met. I can't say it makes me like the Stacy who returned to his life any better, but at least I can understand why he had loved her.

This was beautiful and touching.
shutterbug_12: HouseStacy Smile[info]shutterbug_12 on March 9th, 2008 07:24 am (UTC)
Wow, thank you. That's such a nice thing to say. I'm glad my portrayals of her does the canon character justice. I think the infarction and their break up changed both of them, so it's challenging to keep their characters as we've seen them, but also work in the differences that I imagine they lost during that darker period of their lives.

short, but lovely! As I was reading, there was a movie on tv in the other room and it was playing a very very peaceful piano track that fit relatively well. You've got House and Stacy down to a 't.'
shutterbug_12: HouseStacy Smile[info]shutterbug_12 on March 9th, 2008 07:25 am (UTC)
Aw, what a nice coincidence. Thank you. I love writing them and apparently they like me; they won't get out of my head, but I'm glad they won't. =)

This is lovely. I love that in Stacy's mind he's always Greg, never House, and you write that perfectly. I love the side to their relationship that you bring across here in this fic. Wonderful job. ♥
shutterbug_12: HouseStacy Smile[info]shutterbug_12 on March 9th, 2008 07:28 am (UTC)
Thank you! Yes, unless she was speaking to someone who knew him as "House", she always spoke of him as "Greg"; as far as I know, she always addressed him that way. She had a kind of intimacy with him that nobody else seemed to share. So glad you liked this. =)

I read this new story of yours yesterday but didn't have time to comment sooner.
It's lovely just like everything you write in the House/Stacy world.
More than once I though that House rarely let Stacy phisically comfort him in fic (unless it's sex)and I often wondered why people believe that.
Glad to see you've thoungh about that and wrote such a cute fic. Thanks.

P.S. I can tell how excited I am about the RPG. Post soon the link to it! Squeeeeeee!

I have no idea how I missed this when you first posted it. It's sweet and lovely! And, I might add, I've been addicted to 1825 Days - I have to check it for updates several times a day - and only when I'm NOT in my office. ;)

Aw, thank you!

Ha, love to hear you're loving the RP. We're having so much fun with it. I always look forward to it every day. =)
